Issues, Stories and Sectors to Watch in 2019

Welcome to SustainAbility’s annual trends report, in which we explore the key global trends impacting businesses as they transition towards a more sustainable economy. In 2019 we expect to see continued political instability, more pronounced climate impacts and accelerating rates of biodiversity loss. While the scale and complexity of the sustainability challenges we face is daunting, there is also reason for optimism. We are witnessing unprecedented leadership and innovation driven by cities, regions and businesses, rising civic activism and advocacy by Generation Z, and rapidly growing awareness about issues such as plastic pollution. We expect this growing momentum to drive much-needed progress on critical social and environmental issues in 2019.

For the first time, we are also sharing deeper analysis of five sectors: food & agriculture, technology, pharmaceuticals & healthcare, energy & utilities and financial services. In our sector trends, we explore the key issues facing these rapidly changing industries and discuss emerging solutions. We hope you enjoy the report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
